During this discussion, our panelists identified key strategic imperatives for achieving success in the food packaging industry:

Transformative Megatrends like Sustainability and Lightweighting: The food packaging industry is responding to a shift in customer preferences towards sustainable products and solutions. Efforts include using recycled and renewable materials, eliminating difficult-to-recycle components, and adopting circular models. Similarly, lightweighting involves reducing material thickness and transitioning to lighter materials, which will see plastics continue to offer advantages over heavier alternatives such as glass.

How is your team leveraging transformative megatrends to build a growth strategy for success in the food packaging industry?

Technological Disruptions in Packaging Equipment: Innovations such as vertical form-fill-seal machines for automated packaging and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are enhancing efficiency and versatility in food packaging. In fact, proactive industry players are developing adaptable equipment capable of handling various packaging materials to not only minimize costs but also to experiment with eco-friendly packaging.

Which technological disruptions is your team prioritizing to achieve competitive differentiation in this ecosystem?

Minimizing Plastic Packaging: While plastic remains important for food packaging due to its lightweight and durability, its negative environmental impact is a cause for concern, necessitating alternative solutions. Hence, companies are exploring eco-friendly materials and redesigning packaging for improved recyclability. Most organizations aim to minimize virgin plastic usage and integrate circular economy principles by 2030.

Are your leadership teams driving initiatives to reduce reliance on plastic packaging and seize growth opportunities in sustainable alternatives for food packaging?

Regulatory Influences Reshaping Food Packaging: Regulatory frameworks, such as the European Union (EU)’s plastic packaging regulations mandating tethered caps by July 2024 and the UK placing taxes on packaging with low recycled content, are driving industry standards. Similarly, legislation like California’s Bill 87 set minimum recycled content standards for beverage containers. All of these depict global efforts to encourage sustainability in packaging.

How are you ensuring regulatory compliance to mitigate growth barriers in the food packaging ecosystem?

“Changing consumer requirements and regulatory paradigms are driving a revolution in the packaging industry. Value chain participants need to adapt and innovate not only to guarantee safe packaging but also to fulfill changing consumer requirements effectively.”
