Bioplastics in Packaging
For many years, polymers have been used as the most common packaging materials. This is because, in addition to other desirable properties, polymers are soft, lightweight, and transparent.
Hence, polymers find applications as packaging materials in many sectors like food and beverage, personal care, and others. However, the increased use of synthetic polymers in packaging has also led to deleterious ecological problems due to non-biodegradability.
Although the complete replacement of synthetic polymers with environment-friendly products is impossible to achieve at a short notice, at least for the sector like food packaging, the use of bio-plastics should be made mandatory in the near future.
Biodegradable packaging is generally made of eco-friendly materials that decompose into natural aerobic (composting) and anaerobic (landfill) components, such as carbon dioxide, water, and other inorganic compounds.
This mainly includes biodegradable materials or bio-based degradable material used for packaging. Biodegradable plastics are mainly injection molded or made into films and other packaging items.
