China extends dominance as State Grid increases orders.
China accounted for 75% of the total shipment of smart meters in 2014. This had increased from 65% in 2013, driven by the State Grid and the China Southern Power Grid’s acceleration of smart meter rollouts, which is estimated to be completed in 2017.
As a result, all other regions saw their percentage shares fall—although North America and Europe both increased actual shipment volumes. The global market shipments increased from 42 million to 76.3 million.
China is likely to dominate again in 2015 and 2016, but thereafter its dominance of the market will end once the rollouts are mostly complete. There will be replacement of first-generation meters and some new construction, but this will be well below the 40–60 million unit range of recent years. Both Asia-Pacific and Europe will gain market share, driven by major rollouts in France, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
